It's Macau again

Life of people at Cheung Sha Wan

Our activity for today's SLAM gathering is to bring our mentees out to the neighborhood and capture some interesting photos of people's life in Cheung Sha Wan. This is my first time doing this and I do think it's pretty fun. At least, I had some fun taking photos, although they don't really look good.
And it's also to prepare for our SLAM Social Project, the Photo Competition and Exhibition, so do stay tuned! ^^
Hong Kong style stalls by the roadside. Mostly owned by the elderly.
Trying to make a living on a Saturday.....
Well, something I consider...not so good. You know what are these guys doing?
Yeah you got it right, Hong Kong Jockey Club is just right beside and these people are looking at the results, sitting everywhere by the streets and smoking.
Well, some after-event sharing. I am actually touched by one thing that our mentees mentioned during the ice-breaking game --pictionary. When we asked them for some reflections after playing the game, some of them actually said "Now we can really understand how hard is it for people who can't speak to express themselves, and that we must appreciate that we have this ability to speak." And I was like...WOW. How many of us, could actually come to this thought by just playing pictionary....
And after the photo taking session, we also shared about the photos, where we see witness the love shared among the elder population in the area, and we witness the huge population of the elderly in this area where some of them are homeless. And that leads to a lot of further thoughts...will, the society, or the government somehow help these people...? How's life goinna be like during one's 70s 80s or even 90s in this district?
It is, a fruitful day for me :)

HKUST's 20th Anniversary Celebration :)

20th Anniversary Signature Board, and my signature
It's a whole day thing. 3 classes skipped, and I do feel guilty about that. But...it's something that I've committed at the beginning of the semester and I will keep my promise. It's a huge celebration and it's really nice to be part of this event anyways :)
The VIP room, and view out of HKCEC.
And so we got a coach to send us to Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. But no coach back. We got Chinese food lunch boxes prepared for us, but not invited for the table dinner (well, we heard that some student associations got invited...hmm, why not us...we're here for the whole day....). We had the rehearsal for around 5-6 times, a really short and simple rehearsal. After all, we will only be officially in the ceremony for around 5-8 minutes max.

And the most anxious part is that (as mentioned in my previous blog entry)...I was a THAI today, instead of Malaysian. Well, our roles (as international students) is to wear our national costume and kick off the start of the ceremony and welcome our officiating guests into the hall. And since the school can't find any Thai students to be in the ceremony, they got me to dress up in the Thai costume instead. To be honest, I do feel kinda misrepresented. Imagine what'll happen if a person comes up to me and speak Thai all of a sudden? That'll be scary man......
Spot me in the photo? Haha...cheers, almost 20 nationalities here!
Anyways, I had a lot of nice food today. And I think it's pretty meaningful to witness this huge event as well...many BIG NAMES were here including the CE of HK, and even our ex-President, Prof Paul Chu.
So enjoy the photos here people.....
Owh I love the chocolates. Tasted like some high-class ones..and the design of the display is super cool too. Everything is made of chocolate!
Small lil tarts, cute and nice.
Guess what? I had like THIRTEEN strawberries this evening!! ^.^ Super sweet and yummy :)
All the best to HKUST, and to those who have yet to check about events in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary, do check out its official page!
There were many bouquet of flowers around...fresh and really nice!
Owh ya, one more exciting thing, I met Risa in the event, the girl in Japanese Yukata. She used to be a student in the International School of Kuala Lumpur, and I had spoken to her and her mum when I went back to Malaysia to promote UST in September 2009. I was hoping that she'll come by so that I will have a friend to help me in improving my Japanese, and at last I meet her today! ^^

Super cool beatboxing

I had another busy day.
Classes, meetings, paper checking, attend peer counselor's monthly gathering, and finally attended the HKUST Talent Contest 2011.
I enjoyed the last part of my day most. Watch this video and you'll know why :)

Isn't this super cool? ^^

And something to share from the peer counseling session. If you're free, you may try this out if wana know your character strengths from Positive Psychology perspective. You may need to register for a login ID before proceeding to the survey"VIA Survey of Character Strengths. There'll be a brief result after that too...

Next up, I'll be Thai for one day!

Cocktails

就是上課從9am5.30pm

Public Holiday... and the food

How I wish I could have more of these public holidays in the middle of the week.
Haha. It's a day off for the Ching Ming Festival, what we call Cheng Beng in Penang. Well, I do miss it, cause it's a time in the year where my uncles will come over to Penang from Johor to pray for my grandpa and grandma and gather at my home for good porridge with those roasted pig and other nice food. Haven't done that for a pretty long time, and I'm just wondering when will be my next time joining the festival.

Anyways, it's public holiday today which means....hurray no school and meetings on campus!!
So me and Alex and Len Foong decided to hike the trail behind HKUST to go to Hang Hau/Po Lam.
View of Hang Hau houses, and some rich person's bungalow the mini bus usually passes by...
At first, we thought it would take like more than an hour or so...but in the end, it only took us about less than an hour, and the thing is we stopped quite a lot along our way to take some photos and to 吹水 a lil. So this means that walking to Hang Hau only takes like 30 minutes from the South Gate of HKUST campus and I should consider doing this in the future to save money...HAHAHA. Just kidding...I'm not 'that' crazy yet :)

And so we decided to walk around and get some food. Our first stop was....
HKD29.5 per scoop. And add HKD1 for the second scoop^^
Papagallo ICE CREAM!!! We got it because I had a small coupon "buy second scoop at HKD1". And we chose Italian Coffee and Pineapple Cookie flavour. The pineapple one was really really good

Then we walked to Po Lam from Hang Hau and looked around some sports apparels shops and OMG this time I saw K-Swiss that I liked a lot selling at a much cheaper price than what I saw in Tiu Keng Leng that day...but I controlled myself and we went to have some food at the mini food stalls near Park n Shop. It was pretty worth it as we only spent like HKD19 per person for four types of food, including fried noodles, fried多春魚(I think it's called Shishamo, or something like capel?), rice balls (飯糰), and 肉燥飯(minced meat rice). And after lunch, I decided to buy the shoes --after detailed comparison of its pros and cons with the converse shoes. Haha....
From top left clockwise: Our yummy lunch!, Vege with mushroom and Japanese Tofu, Rojak (thanks to Alex's sauce from Malaysia), and Curry Fish!
And I decided to cook curry fish for dinner for everyone tonight too ^^
Yeah...it was a nice day. But too bad...I havta go back to reality as soon as dinner is over.
Obviously, I needed more than just a 24 hour holiday.

Summer plans

Hopeless.

A wish from....

Remember that I mentioned that I have like 18 or more tasks in my to-do-list?
Well, I'll have to complete lots of them today. But first let me intro my lunch for the day :)
Top: Vege with Kiamhu and Chinese Mushroom. I love冬菇s. Haha...
Bottom: Also cooked chili taukua and salted egg. Kapitan chicken contributed by Alex
Had quite some fun and good exercise playing badminton with my RM7.50 worth badminton racquet with Yu Kee. Haha...although I feel sleepy after that=.=
While I was feeling lazy about all the emails to write, and projects to do, I received a wish from......
A wishing card from Henry Shek, the KPMG Performance & Technology team Principal who interviewed me :)
This is actually pretty surprising. And it's kinda cool too. I really enjoyed my interview him, and I believe that I'll definitely be able to learn a lot from him, well that's if  I do get the chance to be in his team when I start work.
Yay...thanks a lot Henry and KPMG. I shall work really hard for my exams^.^

Curry fillet rice which is not bad (HKD37 including one hot drink). But the service is BAD

Oh my god。
Left: It's interesting to see these small game booths in Hong Kong (catch the fish!)
Right: Lots of snacks...what we call零食/junk food actually
Top: Five shops in a row selling noodles
Bottom: Four shops in a row selling desserts
Lots of people!!
My simple dinner. I like the Curry fish balls Siew Mai (燒賣) is not bad too. And Matcha bubble milk tea.

Disneyland

Disney is a place full with magical moments.
They actually came to our uni for graduate recruitment talk. And the main positions they offer will be on the Operations side, where you can choose between divisions such as F&B, Merchandise, Entertainment, Hotel etc. There are also vacancies for the Professional side which involves main functions such as Finance, HR, Marketing etc. BUT they only hire people with min 1 year relevant working experience. Which means, Disneyland HK is out from my choice. To be honest, I wouldn't mind starting as a frontline staff because I really enjoy doing those stuff as a barista in Starbucks, but the pay is just so not enough for me to live a life in this super high living standard city of Hong Kong...so...BIG4 would be a little better than this.
Nevertheless, the recruitment was pretty fun. Perhaps because they gave out FREE DISNEY PLUSH TOYS when you answer their questions...haha. Cool, I like it, and I got myself a MICKEY!
BIG YAY^^
It's the Fantasia 2000 version of Mickey  :) Angel got the Halloween version of Eeyore. And this is the Vietnamese Snack Plate that we had^^ Yummy....
Lucky that I don't really have a hectic schedule today. Just two meetings one lecture one recruitment talk one dinner. Haha...that's really minimal for me. But I did spend like an hour or so writing down all the stuff that I have to complete lately, and not to my surprise, I managed to think of 18 tasks in like 5 minutes, and in 30 minutes it's more than one page of my diary=.= OMG. Don't feel like doing them cz weekend is here! Haha.
Had dinner with Angel today, at 越棧越式湯粉專門店 Viet's Choice, Po Lam. To be honest, this is kinda my first time asking a friend out for dinner in HK. I never really have the time to do this all the while studying here and I do kinda regret it since I'm graduating soon and things will really change soon. It was a great dinner anyways, thanks for the treat! I really enjoyed it, and sorry if I gave too much advice la :)
Pretty nice dinner! I like the Beef Hor Fun, and I have no idea what the snacks are called. Haha...
Wanna go walk around.....need some air, and shopping or even Disneyland maybe? Haha...will see how then.
